Bad things happen to good people. Unfortunately, this is an inevitable part of life. However, we have an amazing capacity to cope with bad events without long-lasting negative effects.
When we face situations that threaten us, we react without even having to think about it. Our bodies take action long before we decide what to do. This ability to respond almost instantaneously is a big reason we have risen to the top of the food chain.
However, if we are stopped from taking action, our brains and bodies and get stuck. This “stuckness” can lead to problems all over our lives. When we have lots of problems because of bad events, we call this Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, even mild to moderate problems, while not as bad as PTSD, need attention from a professional in order to get “unstuck.”
As science gets better and better at understanding the brain and body and what leads to PTSD, our ability to help people heal from trauma also improves.
Today, by working with people’s thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and movements, we can help people get “unstuck.” We can reduce or eliminate problems created by the bad events, and get on with their lives.
I use a method called “Somatic Experiencing.” I chose this method because it is very smart and is based upon the best science we have about bodies and brains. It is also a positive, gentle, strength based, and effective treatment. If you would like to learn more about Somatic Experiencing, click here. (Embed traumahealing.com)
